What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is also known as fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). It is a chronic widespread pain condition which affects all areas of the body. Pain may feel achy or sudden and shooting or stabbing. Stiffness, tightness or band like sensations around joints and muscles are also common. You may experience other symptoms such as itching, tingling, burning or numbness sensations in your skin.
You may have problems with your bowels, commonly irritable bowel syndrome but also constipation, diarrhoea, stomach cramps or a combination of all four.
Your bladder may be affected. Difficulty passing urine or recurrent urinary tract infections and rarely urinary retention can be a problem for some people.
Headaches (all types) and migraines are common in fibromyalgia.
Fatigue and sleep disturbances are two of the most notorious symptoms of the condition.
